Presentation

IPPUR is celebrating its 50-year anniversary and its relevant trajectory in the Urban and Regional Planning scope in Brazil and in the Public Policies Field. Several activities involving professor, managerial technicians in education, students, former students and guests will be carried out between 2021 and 2022 to celebrate such an important date in order to rescue its history and academic-institutional mission.

The Post-Graduation Program in Urban and Regional Planning (PUR) of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro was created in 1971 by the Coordination of Engineering Post-Graduation Programs (COPPE). Its creation led to a partnership set between the Federal Housing and Urbanism Service (SERFHAU/Hinterlands Ministry) and Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. In 1987, PUR gave birth to the Urban and Regional Research and Planning Institute (IPPUR), which is integrated to UFRJ’s Legal and Economic Sciences Center (CCJE). The Doctorate Course in Urban and Regional Planning was created in the following decade, in 1993.

Over its 50 years, PUR/IPPUR aimed at offering a broad interdisciplinary matrix whose workload is fulfilled by mandatory and optional disciplines of theoretical and analytical formation linked to the territorial dimension of social processes that encompass the Economy, Sociology, Political Sciences, History, Geography, Urbanism, Law, Philosophy, Engineering, Anthropology, Public Administration and Environmental Sciences fields.

The Public Management for Economic and Social Development Program (GPDES) of Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, at graduation level, was created in 2011 to form public managers capable of elaborating, implementing, managing, monitoring and evaluating policies, plans, programs and projects for economic and social development at local, regional and national scope, either in governmental agencies or in civil society organizations of public interest.

Although the 50th anniversary of PUR/IPPUR has been celebrated at a moment of global economic and sanitary crisis, celebrating the existence of this Institution highlights its political, social and academic role in coping with the existing issues in the Brazilian society. Over its trajectory, PUR/IPPUR always focused on the critical approach towards urban and regional planning, and on its participation in debates on urban and regional policies in the country, from the perspective of building a socially fair and economically egalitarian society.

The PUR-IPPIR’s 50th anniversary celebrations will start at the Opening Table of the 2021 IPPUR Week. Several activities are expected to happen between 2021 and 2022, some of them are still happening, such as the contest for academic works by students, which will be noticed soon.
